The founding members of Insight Racing were Grayson Randall, Kate Caldwell, Mike Randall, Matt Rhinehart and Brendon Shanley. They met when Grayson was mentoring High School Robotics. Kate, Mike, Matt and Brendon were in High School at that time. Later, when the students were at NC State University, they got together and formed Insight Racing to compete in the first DARPA Grand Challenge.
